Screen2Green

The sponsor of this project is Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto.

The goal of Screen2Green is to design, develop, and test an automated interactive plant pot that is linked to the user’s digital activity, encouraging healthier screen habits while promoting well-being, environmental awareness, and sustainability.

The system monitors the condition of a plant and automatically provides care when needed. By connecting plant growth and health to the user’s digital behavior, the product aims to motivate more balanced technology use through positive reinforcement while ensuring the well-being of both the user and the plant.

Project Requirements

Plant Health & Automation
  • The system shall automatically monitor the plant’s condition and control watering when required.
  • The solution shall maintain suitable growing conditions for the selected plant species and prevent overwatering or underwatering.
  • The system shall promote healthier screen habits without negatively affecting the health
Safety
  • Unordered List ItemElectronic components and water-related components shall be physically separated to ensure safe operation.
  • The product shall not pose any risk to users, plants, or the surrounding environment during normal operation.
User Experience & Accessibility
  • The system shall be intuitive and easy to set up, use, and maintain.
  • The product shall provide clear and understandable feedback regarding plant status and user interaction.
  • The design shall be accessible to users with varying levels of technical knowledge.
Privacy & Data security
  • User data shall be stored and transmitted securely.
  • Collection and processing of digital activity data shall follow GDPR principles, including data minimization, transparency, and user consent.
Sustainability
  • The product shall use eco-friendly, recycled, recyclable, or sustainably sourced materials whenever possible.
  • The system shall minimize energy consumption during operation.
  • The design shall encourage sustainable behavior and environmental awareness.
Cost & Technical Feasibility
  • The product shall be affordable and achievable using commercially available technologies, including sensors, microcontrollers, and open-source software solutions.
  • The design shall balance functionality, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
Durability, Repairability & Modularity
  • The product shall be durable and capable of long-term indoor operation.
  • Broken or worn components shall be easy to replace.
  • The system shall be designed to facilitate maintenance, repair, and future upgrades through modular components.
Behavioral Impact
  • The system shall encourage healthier screen habits through positive reinforcement and user engagement.
